Days Special Study Safari
Day
1 — Arrival
Upon arrival, transfer to the KIA Lodge, which offers
stunning views of snowcapped Kilimanjaro, the fabled
“rooftop of East Africa.”
Day
2 — Arusha
Join your safari companions late this morning for
a briefing by Study Leader . After a welcome lunch,
set out on your first game drive in Arusha National
Park. This small but magnificent setting, with the
rugged profile of Mount Meru as its backdrop, is distinguished
by the presence of thousands of waterfowl, both the
blue monkey and the colobus monkey, and warthogs.
(B,L,D).
Day
3 — Ngorongoro Conservation Area
Depart Arusha for Ngorongoro Crater, the caldera of
a long-extinct volcano and a World Heritage site.
En route, stop for lunch at the charming Gibbs Farm,
a beautifully landscaped coffee plantation. Upon arrival
at the crater, check into Ngorongoro Crater Sopa Lodge,
located on the lip of the caldera. At sunset, watch
flocks of marabou storks as they gracefully ride the
cooling air currents to the crater floor two thousand
feet below. (B,L,D).
Day
4 — Ngorongoro Conservation Area
Set out in four-wheel drive safari vehicles for a
full-day game drive on the 100-square-mile floor of
the crater, which shelters the greatest concentration
of game in East Africa. The abundance of its wildlife
reflects the diversity of its habitats: savannas,
forests, swamps, salt pans, and a freshwater lake.
Watch for zebra, wildebeest, Cape buffalo, gazelle,
lion, cheetah, leopard, elephant, and the rare and
spectacular endangered black rhinoceros.
Day
5 - The following day, choose one of two
excursions. Dedicate a second full day to the Ngorongoro
Crater and join further opportunities to watch its
unique blend of game. Or, explore the geological treasures
of Tanzania’s Northern Highlands in Empakaai Crater,
a pristine forested caldera surrounding a deep alkaline
lake. Walk down to the crater floor in the company
of a licensed guide, passing through a forest of wild
fig, croton, and red-flowered hagenia trees. In the
distance rises Oldoinyo Lengai, the last active volcano
in Tanzania and the sacred mountain of the Masai herders,
who pasture their flocks in its shadow. (2B,2L,2D).
Day
6 — Olduvai Gorge and the Serengeti
Depart for the Olduvai Gorge, often called “the cradle
of mankind,” where fossil remains of human ancestors
have been discovered and unearthed. Following a brief
lecture by the site’s guardian, continue to the Shifting
Sands, a parabolic black sand dune revered by the
Masai. Upon arrival in the Serengeti, check in for
three nights at the Serengeti Sopa Lodge, ideally
located in the heart of Serengeti National Park, a
World Heritage site. (B,L,D).
Day
7 & 8— Serengeti National Park
For the next two days, enjoy morning and afternoon
game drives in the Serengeti watching some of the
more than two million large animals graze the savannas
and browse the woodlands of this 5,400-square-mile
sanctuary. The Serengeti is renowned for its wealth
of wildebeest, zebra, gazelle, giraffe, eland, and
ostrich, and it forms the core of a multifaceted and
intact ecosystem that encompasses Kenya’s Masai Mara
National Reserve. (2B,2L,2D).
Day 9 — Lake Manyara National Park
This morning drive to Lake Manyara National Park,
the largest breeding ground for pink-backed pelicans
in East Africa. On arrival, check into Lake Manyara
Serena Lodge, built upon the eastern escarpment of
the extraordinary Great Rift, a 3,750-mile-long rent
in the earth’s surface extending from Syria in the
north to Mozambique in the south. An afternoon game
drive presents opportunities to view hippopotamus,
elephant, buffalo, impala, giraffe, and baboon inhabiting
the park’s forests and acacia woodlands. Be watchful
for Manyara’s famous, but elusive, tree-climbing lion
draped on the branch of an acacia! This evening share
memories during a festive farewell dinner with your
safari companions. (B,L,D).
Day
10 — Lake Manyara and Arusha
After a morning game drive, visit the Kibaoni Primary
School on the edge of the Great Rift Valley. Talk
to school children and see the school’s library, the
only elementary school library in Tanzania. Following
lunch depart for Arusha, where you have time to follow
individual pursuits in this attractive highland town
or visit the Craft Center. Conclude at the KIA Lodge
for dinner and time to relax in day rooms before boarding
an overnight flight to Amsterdam. (B,L,D).
